- Extraordinary and old Finnish mattress fabric (“patjakangas”) made of a very rustic and thick linen (linen tow). At the time, mattresses were made with two longitudinal pieces of fabric hand-sewn lengthwise. This is one of those pieces Handloom twill weave 63cm wide. With stripes of different shades of gray and off-white.
ROSARIO SAYS: “This fabric is from the early 1900s. As seen in the Collection of the Seurasaari Open Air Museum (Finland). I think it is an elegant piece because of the simplicity of the colors and the softness they have achieved from the linen. A wonderful treasure!”
The term "tow" refers to the shorter flax fibers left over from the spinning process. Threads and fabrics made from tow fibers are usually thicker and more rustic in nature.
